Do Shoe Laces REALLY Matter?

Does How I Lace My Shoe Matter?

A common question we get at Elias Shoes is if the way someone laces their shoes matters to the overall comfort of the shoe. The short answer is- YES! Laces make a huge difference in the overall support and comfort of a shoe in more ways than you’d think.

The Runners Lace or The Runners Knot

If you have ever been in Elias Shoes and found the most perfect running or walking shoe, but with one small issue- the heel keeps slipping! Most likely we (the sales associate) will ask to re-lace your shoe and see if it solves the problem. Most everyone is shocked when they notice little to no slipping in the heel with just the adjustment of the laces.

This is what is called the runners loop, knot, or lace. No- you don’t have to be a runner to use the runners knot. The runners knot was invented by runners to solve the issue with their feet sliding forward and slamming the front of their shoe. The runners lace provides a more snug and stable feeling around the heel and ankle. Therefore, preventing slipping in the heels and unwanted slamming from the front of the foot.

Wide Foot Lacing

Every foot structure is a little different. Some people have wider for foots (think distance between the area right under the pinky toe and big toe), but smaller heels. Some people have higher insteps (top of the foot), but narrow feet. Simply because there are a hundred different feet out there, there are also a hundred different ways to do a wide foot lacing- but the concept is the same.

Wide foot lacing is used when someone has a wider section of the foot (this ranges from being the whole foot, or the instep, or maybe the forefoot) and needs a little more room in the top of the shoe. Depending on where someone needs a wider fit will determine what kind of lacing is done.

Narrow Foot Lacing

Narrow foot lacing is becoming less and less common, but it still exists. This kind of lacing is done for someone who has a narrow foot and needs a tighter fit all around. Keep in mind that you should never have laces too tight. This can cause many unwanted issues if done long term.

At Elias Shoes, most narrow feet clients are satisfied with a standard lace combined with the runners knot.
